So they don’t have to pay staff overtime to come and clean up snow. So they don’t have to find staff willing to come in and do it.
SSL hours? Strong teens who live within walking distance or close by wanting a workout when they can't get inside the school facilities? Other ideas?
As litigious as DCUM is, MCPS is unlikely to have students come in the shovel. Staff slipping on ice is already a workman’s comp issue.
Not really a lawsuit issue, though. If you look at the slip and fall lawsuits against MCPS, they're not snow/ice related.
A couple people here spread an absurd level of FUD about the "dangers" of snow.
However, students wouldn’t be eligible for workman’s comp the way staff are. Their parents would have to file slip and fall lawsuits. MCPS isn’t going to chance it when they could just do a two hour delay.
They will clear the schools today. Plenty of time to.
They're working on a Sunday??

Why just a delay? Someone could slip. Kids without jackets might get old waiting for buses. We really need to close out an abundance of caution. Teachers really need a break, too.
No, teachers need to report to work and teach their students. Teachers already have winter coming very soon.

Besides the liability issues here, even if you could get staff (which you’d have to pay) and kids to come out early enough to do this, you can’t Mobilize this fast enough to prevent closure for an overnight/early morning weather event. Plus you’d be asking teens and parents to drive on potentially untreated roads and what parent wants their inexperienced teen drivers doing this. (As of 8:30 this morning road treatment was not yet completed in the county).

+1 everything else is operating normally today. Look around.
It’s not about today, during the day. It’s about the fact that there will be black ice on the ground as kids are walking to school and the bus in 0 degree windchills tomorrow.
County and state should treat the roads and you should bundle your kids up. It's winter, it gets cold. Stop looking for excuses for your kids not to go to school.
And yet roads and sidewalks especially won’t be treated. At least delay to make sure it’s fully light out when kids are walking and driving to school.

...why? For snow that stopped falling 24 hours earlier?
Inevitable ice forming… wind chills below 0. It will definitely be at least a delay tomorrow
