This is my first time at this rodeo, so wondering if this "provisional" acceptance language is standard?

interviews are not considered
I know CDS says this, but really wonder whether the might carry a little weight.

Holy crud! That must sting. It's not a rational process, I keep reminding myself of that.
Maybe the AO didn't understand the school doesn't have APs?
I suspect he will end up somewhere great eventually but lots of sympathy meanwhile.
It might be worth having a teacher or outside adult read over the app too just in case there's something in there that could be misinterpreted. You may have already done that, and the answer is probably that it's just irrational, but just in case.
I'm sorry!! There are lots of irrational things that happen. It could be that another kid applied ED from their school and they had decided they could only take one, it could be that the AO had an off day and was grumpy when reading the app. it could be something else entirely random. Who knows.
That said, I would also have someone read the app just to make sure the kid comes off sounding appealing and that there are no red flags. Maybe something is phrased weirdly or looks dishonest (too good to be true). You never know with teenagers.
Good luck! I'm sure he'll have a lot of options down the road and in my experience the vast majority of kids land where they're meant to be.
Could this actually happen? I learnt that they don't cap by school.

No. They do allow you to get multiple LORs, so if DC can get meaningful recs, which don’t have to be just teachers, that gives an opportunity to expand the application.
Also DC’s alumni interview covered the “why” question. I know people say alumni interviews don’t make a difference, but DC told me his was pretty focused and intense. He’s a STEM kid, but the interview ended up taking a turn into literature and philosophy. DC said it seemed like the interviewer wanted to see if he could hold his own in those areas, so again another opportunity.

I’m sorry! Your kid sounds great and I’m sure will be happy elsewhere. Hope he’s not too disappointed. We are waiting on Swarthmore ED and know it’s a crapshoot- so tough.
to add: Goes to very strong school that feeds into Midd. Last year 4 kids got in ED1 alone
We are also waiting on Swarthmore ED. 12/15 (but rumor that it could be 12/13)
You applied ED to Midd and Swarthmore at the same time?
