Do your neighbors know how to:
Build a fire
Process a deer/ turkey/ game bird
Frame a simple shed
Install a well pump
Clean load and fire a pistol or rifle
Or do .... anything that doesnt cause a traffic jam at Tysons?
Born and raised in DC and a woman I can and have done all of the above (I haven’t processed a deer but have a chicken and fish) with the exception of installing a well pump because I have had no need (public utilities so no well) I could do it with a YouTube video the proper tools and think that my other repair skills make up for it (HVAC, appliance and plumbing repair, car repair etc) they are hobbies and I consider it fun. Having said this, how does not having these skills make one “out of touch” if they are not relevant to your life? Building a shed and skinning a deer do not make someone in touch with anything other than those specific things. So maybe you should move.

He can even repair a car. And, yes build a fire or fence or deck or patio. Unfortunately he doesn’t feel these skills are appreciated by many these days who prefer to hire landscapers, contractors and bring their cars to mechanics. Our own kids have zero interest.

So, what happens out there when someone has a crisis, OP? Do you build a shed — or load the pistol? If you call 911, then, maybe, just maybe, you might grow to appreciate a wider range of skill sets than the ones you’re hyping in your post.

The rest of them though? I've never had a moment in my life where I thought, "Man, I wish I knew how to process a turkey" or "Ugh, life would be so much better if I could clean a rifle".
If it ever comes to a point that I need to do those things, I guess I would learn. But so far it hasn't been required for my life's trajectory. My best friend bought a farm during covid and learned a lot in a few short months. If the desire or need is there, the skills are learnable relatively quickly.
I'm guessing I have some skills they don't have, they have some skills I don't have. Hopefully we both have the skillset we need to be happy, healthy, and financially solvent on a daily basis.
