I want to cry for on behalf of my poor school as well which there are no voices are heard. We have no resources and you can say that we are discriminated as well due to high FARM rate of sorts of colors. If Wootton gets Crown HS as either a permanent or holding school, wootton families should just stop complaining and whining further. I originally thought that they will make Crown HS as temporary holding school for Damascus HS. And, I don't even know what has happened.
I don't really do social media or the online thing. DCUrbanmom being one of the exceptions because there are usually topics that interest me. (although honestly I'm not a fan of it too and only just recently started going on here again to see what's going with these boundary proposals).
So haven't really seen the outcry for the renovation of Wootton. The most I've seen were students speaking at the BOE about it. But so were students from Poolesville.
In all honesty the reason why a lot of high FARMS schools probably get overlooked is because they have very little parental involvement and no one advocating for them. I forget where I heard it or saw it but remembering hearing one of the high FARMS elementary schools had lower than a ten percent PTA participation rate. This is compared to W schools with that have high participation rates.
And if no one is advocating, chances are you'll get overlooked. Kind of like the squeaky wheel someone said that MCPS accommodates in one of these recent threads. I'm not saying it's right but it is how things work to a certain degree.
But even highish FARMS rates schools advocate for themselves. For example a couple of years ago South Lake (70 percent FARMS) went to the news with their problems:

And it looks like it worked where it looks like they got a new building in 2023:

So if it's something that you really want, you really do need to "cry on behalf of your school"
All the high farms schools we've been to have parental involvement to the extent the school allows it, which often the school doesn't allow it (which makes you wonder what they have to hide). Many of us are very involved so its really obnoxious for you to make these assumptions we aren't.
The reasonable solution is to give them Crown as MCPS loves to waste money so there is no more money to replace many of our schools. Our school has just as many issues and regularly has electrical and plumbing issues as well as mold and other things. But, we know MCPS will not fix it so whats the point?
Yeah I didn't mean to make it a blanket statement.
The efforts of the South Lake community is an example of high parental/PTA involvement.
And we've been in groups with East County families and seen how much effort the families put in their kids but just aren't given the opportunities. Some of which is because MCPS says that the families don't have the capacity for.
But the numbers I gave about PTA participation by schools were actual numbers for specific schools given a while back and was shown as part of a correlation in school performance.
And like I said, I follow the board meetings somewhat, just to see what's going on. And have seen advocates for Wootton, Magruder, Poolesville and South Lake. If families don't advocate for themselves, it will be hard to get what they want.
But look at what some of the things that the South Lake community say that they perceive why their school's renovations kept getting pushed back. They couldn't help but think it was racism too, maybe their FARMS rate and they went to the news too. Did any posters on here tell them to shut up?
Also from what I heard, one of the older W schools, built before 1980, had to close off a wing because there was a dead rat stuck somewhere in the ducts and the smell permeated through that section of the building.
So not exactly the same but similar issues as the issues a South Lake. But people are saying that families at a particular school should shut up?
