We have no resources and you can say that we are discriminated as well due to high FARM rate of sorts of colors. If Wootton gets Crown HS as either a permanent or holding school, wootton families should just stop complaining and whining further. I originally thought that they will make Crown HS as temporary holding school for Damascus HS. And, I don't even know what has happened.

I don't really do social media or the online thing. DCUrbanmom being one of the exceptions because there are usually topics that interest me. (although honestly I'm not a fan of it too and only just recently started going on here again to see what's going with these boundary proposals).

So haven't really seen the outcry for the renovation of Wootton. The most I've seen were students speaking at the BOE about it. But so were students from Poolesville.

In all honesty the reason why a lot of high FARMS schools probably get overlooked is because they have very little parental involvement and no one advocating for them. I forget where I heard it or saw it but remembering hearing one of the high FARMS elementary schools had lower than a ten percent PTA participation rate. This is compared to W schools with that have high participation rates.

And if no one is advocating, chances are you'll get overlooked. Kind of like the squeaky wheel someone said that MCPS accommodates in one of these recent threads. I'm not saying it's right but it is how things work to a certain degree.

But even highish FARMS rates schools advocate for themselves. For example a couple of years ago South Lake (70 percent FARMS) went to the news with their problems:

https://wtop.com/montgomery-county/2020/07/south-lake-elementary-school/

And it looks like it worked where it looks like they got a new building in 2023:

https://bethesdamagazine.com/2020/08/26/south-lake-elementary-building-project-accelerated-as-complaints-pile-up/

So if it's something that you really want, you really do need to "cry on behalf of your school"

All the high farms schools we've been to have parental involvement to the extent the school allows it, which often the school doesn't allow it (which makes you wonder what they have to hide). Many of us are very involved so its really obnoxious for you to make these assumptions we aren't.

The reasonable solution is to give them Crown as MCPS loves to waste money so there is no more money to replace many of our schools. Our school has just as many issues and regularly has electrical and plumbing issues as well as mold and other things. But, we know MCPS will not fix it so whats the point?

Yeah I didn't mean to make it a blanket statement.

The efforts of the South Lake community is an example of high parental/PTA involvement.

And we've been in groups with East County families and seen how much effort the families put in their kids but just aren't given the opportunities. Some of which is because MCPS says that the families don't have the capacity for.

But the numbers I gave about PTA participation by schools were actual numbers for specific schools given a while back and was shown as part of a correlation in school performance.

And like I said, I follow the board meetings somewhat, just to see what's going on. And have seen advocates for Wootton, Magruder, Poolesville and South Lake. If families don't advocate for themselves, it will be hard to get what they want.

But look at what some of the things that the South Lake community say that they perceive why their school's renovations kept getting pushed back. They couldn't help but think it was racism too, maybe their FARMS rate and they went to the news too. Did any posters on here tell them to shut up?

Also from what I heard, one of the older W schools, built before 1980, had to close off a wing because there was a dead rat stuck somewhere in the ducts and the smell permeated through that section of the building.

So not exactly the same but similar issues as the issues a South Lake. But people are saying that families at a particular school should shut up?

Using Crown as the new Wootton would mean that MCPS could save that money, minus whatever it would cost to keep it functional and safe for use as a holding school. Further, having a holding school in general would allow Magruder to be rebuilt faster and at a savings of over $100M. That is close to half a BILLION dollars in savings for taxpayers. In the name of fiscal responsibility, how could we choose to do this plan?

*edit: how could we NOT choose this plan?

I mean people seem to think that Black and Brown kids are taking money meant for them (actually the opposite happens every year) and the BOE likes to listen to rich people so that's why.

Our school is a dumb and far worse, but we know better than to complain and risk the school closing.

It kind of seems like the posters saying that the population at Wootton should have just been quiet and not complain, should've just stayed silent and be the "model minority".

With Wootton always being overlooked for renovations and passed on for the CIP, one can't help but wonder and see the comparisons on how immigrant populations were at first regulated and confined in slums.

Well, Wootton is being restricted to Region 4 now. No more access to magnets at Blair, Einstein, or Poolesville. Oh wait, is MCPS going to kick Wootton to Crown's Region 5? That means no access to RM either. So no access to any already established magnets - hmmmm...

No, Wootton is restricted in Region 4 in all 8 options. Check out the articulation table on the boundary study website. If Crown is going to be used as a holding school, Region 5 will also have 4 HSs instead of 5. If Wootton is moved to Crown permanently (option H), the new Crown will be part of Region 4 and host programs that Wootton is supposed to host.

Wootton moving to the Crown facility is a win for that community and for the new region 4. With Churchill, Wootton will have a good student cohort to rebuild an outstanding STEM program.

Region 4 is in a lesser bad situation main because the cohort of high-achiever is large and strong, but still there’s an outcry of lacking teachers and resource to fund extra teachers, let alone magnet teachers. Wootton couldn’t even find an AP Calc teacher at the beginning of this semester.

Not finding a teacher vs not having the class is very different. We have classes with no teachers. The teacher teachers another class and gives the one class assignments and videos.
