As some posters suggested, it could be a developmental issue with the kid—ADHD, OCD, mild dyslexia, or something else. I recommend focusing on getting the child tested. Homework requirements at FCPS elementary schools changed this year, and they are now required to assign homework. Many teachers give a long list and expect students to do what they can or want. I have four kids from 3rd to 8th grade in the Mclean-Haycock pyramid, and none of them (including the 8th grader) is doing 4 to 5 hours of homework daily. I find this extremely hard to believe, and if those time estimates are accurate, I suspect a learning disability as the underlying issue (especially if he's not wasting time and diligently working throughout the 4 to 5 hours). Go get him checked out, OP.

I would add that “doing homework” was my favorite excuse for avoiding stuff I didn’t want to do from grade 3-12. My mom and dad never checked. Mostly, I read and drew.

I would do 30 minutes max but I would also check with the teacher that what the kid is bringing home is actual homework and not schoolwork. The only work my kid had as homework on the computer in ES was Lexia and ST Math. The description of the work sounds like incomplete school work. That is a different issue to address.

If it is an AAP Center it helps people understand the situation better. There are some AAP Centers where the parents demand a lot from the teachers. There are some AAP Centers where parents are insistent on getting their kid into AAP and they kid ends up in a class that is moving too fast for them and the work is over their head. Those are different situations then a new teacher who has gone a bit crazy with homework or, the most likely scenario, the kid screwing around in class and bringing home their school work and telling their parent it is homework.

DS has one friend who had a lot of school work as homework with ADHD and OCD, he just struggles with getting stuff done and the parents developed a strategy with the school to handle it. DS had other classmates whose parents would comment to me how much homework the kids have and were confused when I said my kid had little to none. When we shared notes, the parents figured out their kid was goofing off in class and the kid was bringing home school work to finish. Our school was not a Center and the teachers gave limited amounts of homework.

Sit with him, do two hours max (triage the most important), and then email the teacher that you sat with him and list out what he was not able to finish. Do it for a week and then ask to meet if the situation has not self corrected.
