It's a classic because it's real. I finally started buying my own stocking staffers, and a few things to put under the tree that Santa got me. I used to stew about it, but at least this way I get stuff I want rather than stuff I would toss anyway, so I am over it.

My stocking is empty unless I fill it but it looks great just hanging there. I just put a candy cane on the outside and dark chocolate inside on Christmas Eve. It’s okay—I didn’t grow up with stockings but I wanted the kids to have them. DH and the kids give me Christmas gifts.
