$250k would be lower middle class at best in an more desirable areas like McLean, Bethesda, or Falls Church City and a lot of the DMV. Two Grade 10 GS-13s make almost $300,000 a year and no one thinks a family of two non managerial Feds is high income. $250,000 HHI will barely get you a $650,000 home at these interest rates today and at those prices you are looking at townhomes in good school districts. Hardly what I’d call high income.
OP was asking for advice about where to live. If OP cares about schools, her property appreciating, or getting new and better amenities by their house there are a lot of neighborhoods in the DMV that have much brighter futures. If you have some insider knowledge about plans to revitalize the SS to Wheaton corridor on Georgia Ave please us know, but there’s nothing promising on the horizon.

Nah, it’s a great area and a good price for Moco. What I don’t get is how much people overpay for the W school districts. Way overpriced for what you get, and in no way competitive any longer with nicer areas around the country. But keep living in your fantasy.
Spoken like a pleb in a non-W MoCo school district. Houses west of Rockville Pike in Rockville/Potomac area in even the modest UMC areas are American dream type houses and W schools are elite. My neighbors here in Wootton cluster are construction executives and doctors, whereas people in most Silver Spring neighborhoods are like, teachers, nurses and accountants.
What awful, awful people!!

Idiot PP should be ashamed of themself.
Never said they were awful people. They just don’t make much money, and that’s OK.
Also I said most Silver Spring neighborhoods… I suppose Woodside is a little different. I just can’t for the life of me understand why folks with kids in that neighborhood wouldn’t just buy in a W school district, unless they send their kids to private, then MAYBE I get it. But still, being so close to sketchy DTSS as opposed to beautiful wooded neighborhoods within a short drive to areas such as Park Potomac and Pike & Rose is… curious.
Pike and Rose is a mall with fake streets. It’s awful, like walking through a Cheesecake Factory. And I hate driving on 270.
Why would you take 270 there?

This. Nice in silver spring is relative. Plan on private schools.
This. I would despise sending my kids to those mediocre schools with a bunch of Mexicans. If I want diversity, give me the elite diversity like Asians/Indians that are prevalent in W school districts.

Anonymous wrote:And what your saying about Woodside being less desirable than Hyattsville is not true. The reality is, prices in Woodside aren't so much lower than outer w school districts once schools are taken into account. And appreciation hasn't been as good as Nova but has been in line with moco in the past 10 years.
For instance, this modest ranch house was 704k ten years ago and just went for nearly 1.1m

Another decent sized ranch went for 1.1

This small cape cod went for 875k

and this colonial went for 1.1m

It's true that prices around Woodside are much lower than Nova, but doesn't seem to be true that they are much lower than Kensington, North Bethesda or Outer Potomac once schools were taken account. Plenty of modest houses in those areas still go for under a million.

Is there anyone who thinks Hyattsville is less diverse than SS or was as desirable as SS in the 1980s and 1990s? Don’t think so. Silver Spring has gone so far downhill in the past 30-40 years that Hyattsville is more desirable and has more economic growth and investment.
