DD committed July 1 after junior year to a top NESCAC. Definitely is sport dependent, but in DD’s sport, all the supported slots are offered and accepted on July 1. There was no time for waffling back and forth. You are lucky to have time, but make sure you know if there’s a time limit if the coach has offered a supported slot.
Have to really like the school. I said really like, not love. No school is perfect.

Have you asked for merit pre-reads from the schools that offer merit aid? A couple of the schools offered this either at time of offer or after if we requested.

In our experience, it was difficult to get “perfect information” from all schools while keeping all offers open. But my kid’s sport wrapped up most commits by end of summer before senior year.

I think sport matters here too. Track commits can be junior year but a lot of them wait to commit until fall of senior year. The Class of 2026 is announcing now and 2027 is doing official visits

I know baseball, and personally know 4 D1 commits dropped by the college in October/November of their senior year...or worse, told their kid is no longer on the team when they show up in August.

The transfer portal is just completely screwing up everything, where the coach doesn't know how successful they were in the portal until August...and then it usually means they drop HS commits if they were too successful.


I would advise asking specifically how many of the previous year’s high school recruiting class ultimately made the spring roster and how many transferred in and out. There are very few D1 programs left that aren’t over recruiting high school while at the same time either gaining or losing a lot of players in the portal. It is unfortunate.
