Yeah great analogy except it does not apply. If MAGA inherently hated gays like many here believe why is one of these guys in one the most powerful positions in the country perhaps the world?

I avoid talking about politics now. I had one family member cut me off because I mentioned I have a friend (who i grew up with) who transitioned and defended her choice to transition, which by the way wasn’t really a big shock to anyone. When you live to witness the trajectory of someone’s life, you have a very different view than if you know no one who has transitioned.

Trump and the GOP have brought so much horrid destruction to our country it is now impossible to ignore. This isn't just about tax policy.

NP. Politics is a choice, and it's a two way street. It can be argued that the parents don't want to see their grandchildren by clinging to their MAGA politics as well.
For my part, I disagree strongly with my own parents politics, and my father-in-law is a dyed-in-the-wool MAGA. I made it quite clear with them all several years ago that if we are to see each other and be a family, there will be no discussion of politics and so far it's been working. Shortly after that, my father-in-law thought he could be Mr. Bossy Wise Guy and tried pushing his luck with some snarky yet stupid MAGA comments, and I immediately called the visit short, "we've got to be going, sorry" and left. Since doing that, he's been a lot more reasonable and kept his asinine politics to himself when we come to visit.
Agreed. There are lines that can't be crossed. Years ago, my inlaws made some racist comments in from of our kids. DH immediately said if you say things like that you are not welcome in this house. They left early in a huff that day, but things have been fine since. They keep that sh*t to themselves. We just focus on other things, because they love our kids. But if they got pushy about it, we would probably limit contact more.
I have difficulty with the word "love" when it comes to mine. I try not to confuse loving us with loving being grandparents. Mine are MAGA to the core and clearly do not care if DH and I lose our jobs due to Trump's policies. We could lose our jobs this month and never ONCE do my parents ask if we're ok. They're not stupid-- they're just ignoring news that makes them uncomfortable. It's more important to "save the country from the Communists" in their aging brains than for their grandchildren to have a house.
I'm the PP you are responding to and I'm sorry you have to deal with that. My in laws really do love my kids. They are their only grandchildren and I can tell. I was thankful that when we had it out with them that one time, they decided the kids meant more than spouting their nonsense.

I follow a lot of conservative/MAGA conversations on X. I know plenty of people who voted for Trump—some who don’t like him personally and others who strongly support him—and I’ve never once seen them say things like “I’m cutting off my commie relatives” or “I’m done with my liberal friends.” What I do see, especially on here and Reddit, is that kind of rhetoric coming far more often from the anti-MAGA side—directed at their friends, relatives, or really anyone who disagrees with them.
Well, you're wrong, and you suck since you're pontificating about something you haven't experienced. I was cut off by my MAGA sibling and have friends who have been too--which is incredibly painful. We'd all rather be in contact.
Everyone I know who was cut off by MAGA was because we asked MAGA to not discuss politics, i.e. set a boundary. Most of the ones I know can't help talking about politics because it's a cult, it's a test, they're trying to convert. A MAGA family member just demanded that my mom tell her what she thought about Charlie Kirk, despite my mom repeatedly asking to not talk about politics.
Not much is both sides these days, but cutting off family and friends definitely is.

Disagree about what though? Because MAGA holds their racist, homophonic and misogynistic rhetoric under the umbrella of politics. And I think people are more likely responding to the racism, misogyny and homophobia than the actual politics.
Separately, you can go to Reddit and easily find maga who want liberals rounded up and destroyed. So just because you aren’t seeing it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

I have. They are openly racist and my son’s girlfriend, who he will likely marry, is Black. Even when we asked them to tone to down ahead of a recent family gathering, they just couldn’t help themselves and I don’t think they even realize how racist they are.
I have to put my son’s future ahead of people who are better off in my past.
A lot of MAGA want to say it’s just politics and it’s easy to avoid politics. But so much of their rhetoric is laced with racism and misogyny. It’s not as easy to avoid that.
