I 100% agree that we could build soccer zones around major urban areas and cease 90% of the travel - Atlanta, DC, Charlotte or Greensboro, etc. with kids outside coming in to play occasional tournaments and friendlies.
However I don't think we like excessiveness, instead I think we have an odd intersection of profit seeking, lack of deep soccer culture - which I do think is changing - and American culture. No idea how that changes except for time and interest in the sport.
