Yes! I was honestly shocked about it. It was so gross. The idea that a gorgeous man would choose that ugly green witch over beautiful Glinda is ludicrous and laughable.

And then when he turned his gun on Glinda? Worst character development ever!

I liked the first better. I didn’t even mind that it was long - it was visually stunning and every song was good. The second, the music was just not as powerful. And the way they wrapped up all the loose ends was just so rushed. I wanted more of the lion, scarecrow, and tin man. I wanted more from the Wizard when he realized about the green bottle. More development between the wedding and the love scene. More from the Goat professor….

I saw the movie with my daughter and we liked it. For me it wasn’t as good as the first movie, but I appreciate it that they tried to bring in darker themes. I like Jonathan Bailey, but he is not a good singer. I also agree with the poster who questioned the love scene between him and Elphaba. Taking some of their clothes off and then showing them in bed with him having a shirt on seem kind of tacky and out of tune with the rest of the movie.

My daughter was really sad about the way it ends, because she wanted the two leads to stay together. Of course it has to be heteronormative in the end, but it would’ve been great if it was a happy ending Thelma and Louise type of vibe at the end. Like Glinda manages to convince the people of Oz that Morrible was the evil one, and then paves the way for Elphaba to come back and she and Glenda govern Oz together.

Cynthia and Ariana are insanely talented singers. I have so much respect for their talent. I don’t know what’s going on with them during their press appearances, and they both definitely need a sandwich. But as far as the performances, they are fantastic.

I loved the sets/costumes, liked some of the musical numbers (what is this feeling? popular, and defying gravity of course) and was kind of bored with the rest, found myself multitasking for most of the movie. Based on that, I won't bother seeing the new one (maybe when it's streaming.)

Just saw it on Broadway for first time this summer. I like Stephen Schwartz's work a lot - but this one not at all.

It was a visual spectacle, and has some famous tunes, but the plot was incoherent and unsatisfying. I may read the book someday to see if that improves my opinion.

I really loved the book and find the musical to be an unacceptable shadow of the book. The book is very much about Elphaba's internal experience and evolution, and while a couple of the songs do a good job with those themes, the rest of the musical feels too broad and focused on style over substance. I never even bothered with the first movie and likely won't watch the second either, but the book is very much worth reading.

Thanks for the rec! I saw the first Harry Potter movie without reading the book and found it the same way as the Wicked musical (a lot of expensive effects but unclear plot). After I read the book, I realized the movie was mainly fanservice.

Same, there is something weird happening and it's just exacerbated by how over-exposed they've been the last few years promoting both these movies. It makes me uncomfortable. They have also both embraced more and more severe fashion as they've lost this weight, insane corsets, Grande's super slicked back buns, Erivo's increasingly over the top jewelry and nails.

There is honestly a body horror feel to it.

Kid's family wrecked and she will cast off that goofball soon anyway. Wicked indeed!

I’m the OP. We saw Wicked 2 last night and after all the hype I was sort of underwhelmed to be honest. The first one was so much better. I didn’t buy the Fiyero/Elphaba pairing at all - it seemed to come out of nowhere. The love scene was sort of gross to me. And then her “best friend” Glinda just accepts it pretty easily and goes back to being her best friend? It just didn’t work for me. Fiyero and Elphaba walking off in some distant land, him in that ridiculous scarecrow costume…it just gave me the ick factor.

The singing was excellent. The costumes excellent. It just didn’t live up to my expectations.

What is going on with these two?

Every interview has this super weird quality to it. They act scared/surprised bby seemingly normal things. They touch each other in a babying way. And of course how they both look malnourished.

Something really weird here.

Their dramatic weight loss from their previous healthy sized bodies is alarming.

I wanted to love part 1. And I did love parts of it. The singing is incomparable, and the design was lush and gorgeous. But the storytelling was slow and they could have easily cut 45 minutes of the movie. With less plot happening in part 2, but a run time north of 2 hours, I don't see how it's going to be anything but another slog. That said, I'm sure I will still enjoy pieces of it.
