I think you grew up in a bubble if you think the men today were born and raised after women gained equality. First off, women still don't have equality. Second, in most of the country, adults today were still raised in very gendered, traditional communities where men were the breadwinners and women were largely responsible for kids and the home. EVEN if both parents worked. I grew up in the 80s and both of my parents had jobs but my dad never cooked or cleaned at all and my mom's job was treated as extra, or something she did for herself when her childcare/household duties were done. My husband's family was the same, and his mom was even the primary earner in his family for years. But his parents still viewed him dad as the head of the household.

People in their 30s and 40s today were the FIRST generation where many or even most women were raised to believe they could have pretty much any job and could be financially and professionally equal to men. There were women who felt this way before, but they were outliers, the products of unusually feminist and progressive households. It was not until the 1990s that it became fairly standard for people, even in small towns and more traditional communities, to raise girls to assume they would get jobs and have careers and would be financially/professionally equal to men. And therefore it is that generation of men who are contending broadly with what it really looks like for women across the board to have financial equality and independence. It truly is a recent shift.

I think both men and women, of all races, have more anger and hostility now. I just think there is more social acceptance of men being angry whereas most women force themselves to express their anger in other ways (NOT always productive ways) to avoid social criticism for being an angry woman.

I think almost everyone on this thread is right about the sources of anger. Agree that the shift in gender politics and women gaining the right to work, own property, and manage their own money has left many men who were raised to believe it is their role (and god-given right) to be a head of household and take care of women and children with a feeling that they don't have a place in society anymore. I also think rampant capitalism in the US makes many if not most people feel angry at their lack of agency in life.

And then I think that political forces, especially MAGA, have found ways to harness that anger and foment more of it, to turn their "movement" into a rage production machine. So it just redoubles.

But again, it's not just men. It's just that men are more sanctioned to express it, especially via violence and violent rhetoric. But women are just as angry. Maybe more, because when people can't openly express anger (in healthy ways) it tends to eat away at them and get worse.

I mean, we ALL get angry. It’s what we do with our anger that is either ok or not ok. Our culture allows men to express their anger inappropriately. It’s permissible to accost women, property, etc without consequences.
Parents, schools, and sadly current administration allows boys to be criminal.

This would result in a Bronze Age style patriarchy, where men all have multiple wives and concubines. yes but DC is a 50% and used to be majority Black city so this could just be an observation of that particular city. I personally have observed more white people in general just behaving badly expecting others to make room for them in the world and it is really annoying. This is why I am pro H1b visa fees etc.. anything so that people can have good lives in their own countries and don't have to come here they way my parents did. I am so so tired of being othered.
