I struggled in HS. I got into a small private college and did well. I went to graduate school right after college and did very well. I was a late bloomer and I did learn from my HS mistakes.

I work in marketing for an hospitality company and make about $150K. I’m not breaking the bank but my Ivy League spouse makes just under a million a year so we live well.

Your son should try hospitality at the property level. If he does well, he’ll move up. If he wants to go to college, he can start at a community college. In the meantime, you may want to get him assessed for any learning disabilities.

My hs gpa was something like 2.9. I have a Ph.d.

the boyfriend's son. Went through special ed. He is a tow truck driver making $70,000 per year in a low cost of living area.

I continued on to do poorly in college, worked a few years after graduating with sub-3.0 GPA, then got diagnosed with ADHD and did very well in law school.

My sibling did terribly in high school, barely graduated (late-diagnosed ADHD and lots of behavioral issues). Dropped out of community college after one semester. They are now a bar/nightclub manager making somewhere in the low six figures (but living in NYC and paying child support). They work a LOT and crazy hours.

Not doing well in high school sounds like some kind of disability or extreme stress, anxiety/hardship.
If I showed up every day and just guessed the answered (specially in US with multiple choice), it's hard to get below 2.6.
Nobody explains why high school was so hard.
College in US was easy. Again, just guess and write something down. Anything.
I have not run into a type who doesn't do well in high school, but blue collar job is also a no-no. We had low IQ people working hard on the farms. They loved it.
So, what's the kid's real problem? Start with that.

I have been a legal secretary my whole adult life. I don't understand what I'm doing and can't do anything else. I hope and pray every day that my job doesn't become obsolete before I die, and have to work until I drop dead.

I performed poorly in high school, frequently earning a GPA below 2.0. I am 47 and make 175K.

Looking back, a big part of my failure to thrive was my parents' hyper-focus on religion rather than academics.
