Having lived in Buffalo though, I'd say that's Western NY, but only if Upstate is questioned. Truth is, no one thinks of anything outside NYC.

Off topic, but has either of you heard of Peisachow Jewelry Co in Buffalo? I know that it's no longer in business. Made jewelry in 1930s-50s.

I grew up in Utica -- within NY state, we always referred to ourselves as "central NY" and that was the accepted region to other NYers.

But once I moved outside of the state, I started saying "upstate."

I am from Buffalo and always say I'm from Western NY. If someone says upstate New York, I know they are a NYC area person. In my experience people from other parts of the state will say something more specific. It's a large state. Saying upstate NY is pretty meaningless other than to indicate you're not talking about NYC area.
