My guess: On average, older Gen X thinks the word is pejorative. Millennials see it as neutral, or possibly even positive.

Being socially awkward does not mean a person has a disorder like “on the spectrum” . People have strengths and weaknesses. Anxiety brings forth awkwardness in a lot of people. It can be worked on but some people will only ever be truly comfortable only with close friends and family.

In prior world use, it meant the kid who was heavily into theater, musicals, rode a unicycle, did mime, was into folkdance group, did standup comedy or slam poetry, etc.

It still means that to me! If I’m describing someone on the spectrum, I’ll just say they’re on the spectrum.
