Surely it's cheaper to Uber for a few days than to pay insurance and registration on an extra car all year round?

After dealing with the only having one available car when the other was in the shop, I was clued in on a local repair shop (not in the DC area) that has loaner cars. It's the best.

Drop yours off, get a loaner from them and off you go on your regular schedule. Responsible for gas.

Why doesn't the nanny or au pair have a car?

We wing it, but live in the city where public transit is often an option.

We have more than 2 cars so we are fine. The Nanny drives them in an SUV we bought for this purpose.

We make due with one car, but have been lucky enough to only have scheduled repairs. Our mechanic is within walking distance and we do it for times when DH and I can alternate working from home. Last time we did take a few Ubers but that's still much cheaper than a rental.

Covered by insurance for accident but not for regular repairs.

My car isn’t in the shop for weeks with regular repairs. If it’s only one day, this isn’t really an issue, is it?

We use our second car. Luckily our lifestyle is not too car-dependent and we can generally survive for a few days with one car.

Make do with one car. That usually involves one spouse taking public transportation when they usually do not.

We have a third car that was cheap/used and isn't that practical (not good for road trips/small).

It is so handy to have when something is going on with one of the main cars.
