Finally feel safe walking the streets of our nation’s capital with hundreds of thousands in camera gear without constantly looking over my shoulder. I’ve got my ‘papers,’ I’m completely legal, and have nothing to worry about—others? Apparently not so much.

As a photojournalist, I’ve felt more at ease walking the streets of Baghdad or Djibouti than I have here in recent years.

But please, DC mommy crowd, go ahead and tell us again how oppressed you—and these criminals—feel.

I don’t have any other place to admit this - but I’m glad. My car was broken into twice while I was in NOMA. I took a trip to the target in Ivy city and I don’t see the crazy homeless man on the corner who was biting at the wind. If you know you know. I can actually walk to my Whole Foods off P street and not deal with panhandling or men passed out on the street. I hope this enforcement sticks around because the quality of life means more to me than anything. I’ll never admit this to my friends/neighbors but I’m secretly happy they are here.

As for the rest of the country—49.8% at least, according to the 2024 popular vote—we’re pretty much done worrying about their feelings.
