Subject: New High School Teacher Contract Times
I don’t know about HS, but when I taught in an FCPS ES the student dismissal was at 3:30. Teachers could leave at 3:45 and of course some would be heading out at that time, which is perfectly acceptable. It was only 15 minutes after the dismissal bell, so I can see why it would be perceived as “bugging out”, but it really isn’t.

Teachers are told “you can come in as early as you care to but you must stay until the contract end time” - at many HS 3:30.
Students are told they must not come in before 7:45. No exceptions. And then when the weapon detectors are in place, go through them.
Teachers are frustrated and very unhappy.
Unions keep saying that they got the teachers a 6% raise -so hooray! But many ask at what expense?
Good. Too many teachers were waltzing out the door as soon as the kids left. There was no chance for a kid to even go get help or ask a question unless it was scheduled in advance. Now teachers have to stay after until 3:30 and I think that is ultimately better for the kids.

At least at the elementary level, having student monitors was really helpful with duties like this. They were cut this year. We were told this was done to fund CBA raises. So now everyone has a bunch of extra duties and morale is low. Other things won’t get done because we are covering the cafeteria or recess.

Every Middle and High School has a built in "remediation" time. It's usually called [mascot] time. That is a built in time for students to get extra help. So after school isn't the only option
Yep. Even with the time after now, kids should be setting up time. Teachers will be pulled into meetings etc and aren't likely to be sitting there waiting for someone to need help.
That’s a fair point. But at least the teachers will be there everyday after school so that provides more days the student can come.

As I’m sure you are well aware, mascot time is a joke. The school uses it to administer their pointless multitude of surveys all year long to the students (SEL screener, youth survey, signs of suicide, etc), any standardized reading and math tests, and of course let’s not forgot the ridiculous SEL lessons which take half the period. Often times students have no work time or greatly reduced work time. And if they haven’t scheduled the time to visit the teacher in advance or the teacher forgets to make them an electronic pass, forget it. Oh and they take mascot time away on pep rally days. So no, it’s not really a good time to get extra help.
