Went to Wes, so I’m partial. Great interdisciplinary programs like College of Letters and College of Social Studies. Bigger than most LAC and very sophisticated. Kids who love to stay up and talk about ideas.

Current Wes parent from earlier, and I also agree that the campus is fine but not particularly special. It’s eclectic; Vassar, on the other hand, is very coherent architecturally and quite beautiful.

And Middletown is not exciting, but it does offer a lot of student-friendly restaurants within a walk of campus and a general sense of place. There’s also a community hospital right there. It’s a good-sized town that helps avoid the feeling of remoteness that’s common at so many SLACs.

I think what makes Wes special is its community and culture. My kid got a sense of that on the tour, so I’d encourage OP to visit if they haven’t already.

Colby is more preppy, less artsy, and much more pre-professional/athletics focused in a way that doesn't really make sense for Wesleyan and Vassar.

I can offer dated advice on the Wesleyan History department. I was a history major there but over twenty years ago.

It was great back then. One thing to be aware of though is that, at least then, there was a strong anti-grade inflation trend in the history department. I did not realize this until I was a senior and the newspaper wrote an article comparing the average grades each department gave. In English in was around 90. In Econ, maybe 85? In History it was 80! That's low. I got plenty of As in History but I also go lots of Bs. In contrast, I got As or A minuses in ALL of the Econ and government classes I took.

The Econ department was fantastic, too.

DS was an Anthro major at Wes and had a wonderful experience. Many research opportunities, mentorship from professors, small group dinners at professors homes….basically everything my other child who went to an Ivy didn’t experience. Close knit, diverse student body which is very down to earth for the most part. The location was also a plus….not remote like many other LACs.

Not at all, you were utterly obnoxious in your response. Rankings are one thing but most people in banking, consulting, tech would hold Hamilton on a par with Vassar and well above Wesleyan and Colby (both good schools in their own right but not quite as good).

Well Vassar had the first Cognitive Science undergraduate major in the country, back in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
