I think it’s generally high end beers, or wines (rose seems to have come back in fashion after being snubbed for years as low brow). For pool drinks, maybe margaritas (preferably not that mass produced mix stuff) or mojitos. The hard seltzers seem popular at all income levels.
I don’t drink much but this is what I see. Fancy “sipping” tequilas have also gotten to be a thing in the last couple of years, with people debating the difference between tequila and mezcal.
I think the “cheap grocery store Chardonnay” think is either a myth or only applies to really older boomers who maybe just drink too much so have lost the ability to be discerning.
These fake WASP tropes are spammed on here for years on end by the same dorks.
I was the one who initially posted about my MIL’s cheap Chardonnay and it’s the truth! I don’t know what to tell you. I was just answering the OP’s question.
So one of your old as dirt senile in-laws drank shit wine. Got it. That does not make it a WASP thing.![]()

No wealthy people would be on this site. They'd have their hired minions do their socials for them.
This isn’t social media.

I'm not wealthy nor do we really socialize with any wealthy people. Our lower and middle income peers drink domestic beer, hard seltzers, and easy cocktails (whisky coke, vodka lemonade, vodka orange juice, vodka tomato juice, vodka ginger beer, things like that). Are the rich who own multi-million dollar beach houses and multi-million boats casually drinking... chilled white wine, rose and champagne? I seriously have no idea.
I know some rich like expensive scotch and expensive bourbons but I'm unsure if those are spirits they drink in the summer.

However, what seemed to be popular was champagne and rosé if you're just chilling on the sun deck. The yacht I was on had their own champagne stock -- someone had visited various producers to find the ideal taste, then had cases shipped over with the yacht's name on the label.
At dinner time, the wines are coordinated with the chef for the meal of course.
I brought over some really good Bourbon not generally available in Europe and the staff was happy to serve that during our after-dinner drinks.
