We were robbed at gunpoint inside our house in Chevy Chase DC. Luckily he took all of our wallets and phones and left. It took 30 minutes for the police to come, and when they did, one officer told me "welcome to DC, my wife sleeps with a gun under the bed, I recommend you do the same." We had lived in DC one week.

Multi layered defense strategy. Dog to alert on any unauthorized activity. 45 on the nightstand, AR-15 under the bed.

When my husband travels, I sleep with my car keys next to my bed so I can push the alert button and set off the car alarm if an intruder got inside.

I grew up without a home alarm system and we had a lot of violent crime - shootings, fights where people we’re slashed, stabbed, and would run bleeding on our doorstep, etc. men would leave teenage me weird presents on the porch (I lived next to the neighborhood soup kitchen). I had one under my bed 1993-1998, then upgraded to a machete.

Bear spray in my nightstand. can neurtalize someone from a distance.
