Lots of random murders occur in "safe" places. The entire town of Moscow, Idaho hadn't had a single murder in 8 years prior to the college murders. Countless Moscow residents interviewed stated that no one in town even locks their doors.

I grew up without a home alarm system and we had a lot of violent crime - shootings, fights where people we’re slashed, stabbed, and would run bleeding on our doorstep, etc. men would leave teenage me weird presents on the porch (I lived next to the neighborhood soup kitchen). I slept with the bat.
