His very long standing friendships, ongoing connections with family and his being on good terms with all three former wives suggest he actually is not an a hole. He has an obvious deep capacity for empathy and he owns the ways he fell short. He said as much in the doc. Those are not the features of a narcissist. He did have a dark angry side and he had a streak of self loathing that both contributed to and was likely the result of an alcohol addiction. Which was bad and went on for decades. He's sober now.
Is he really sober now, though? He didn't say he was in the documentary.
I got vibes that he is not.
I also felt like he was playing with words when he said he had "never gotten a DUI." I think that is a case of his fame buying him out of getting a DUI charge.

He’s an A-list Hamptons celebrity and gave millions to his exes. Of course they have nothing bad to say. You all are naive as hell. This is nothing but a filthy rich self-centered sociopath rewriting history before he croaks. Giving up booze at the end of your life doesn’t erase history. R Kelly wrote a lot of catchy songs too.

It didn't get into it much, but it's clear that Billy Joel is terrible at breakups. For me, it was even more heartbreaking how he didn't even say goodbye to the stepson he basically was a father figure for since birth. Broke up with his mom when he was 12 or 13 and never even said a real goodbye.
But, that said, it was made clear that his family members all had major mental illnesses and he likely does too. And he hasn't dealt with it and has been an active alcoholic for almost all of his adult life, so expecting him to behave in an emotionally mature way is unrealistic. His band members knew him better than anybody. They saw how he treated his wives. They could have known what was possible if they'd opened their eyes.

Yes, I really appreciated this revisitation of her role in his career. It sounds like she did a great job as a manager.
And, given that his alcoholism destroyed three marriages of his (and he may still be an active alcoholic) it seems like the destruction of their marriage was inevitable.

If we cancelled all the artists in the world throughout all of history who were flawed people or narcissistic a holes, we would have no beauty, no music, no art and very little laughter.
