A lot of this depends on what you're used to, and what your travel goals are. I backpacked around parts of Asia and Europe for 6 months in my early 20s and spent around $4k total, including airfare (circa 2000, don't know what that is in 2025 dollars) and still tend to revert to that shoestring mentality. When I recently spent $7k in NYC with my family of 4 for a week, that felt very extravagant even though it's affordable for us now. In my middle age I prefer more comfortable accommodations, but I take public transportation when available. It's my opinion that if you go too lux, you risk insulating yourself from the culture you came to experience. But if your goal is a spa-like experience and you just want to relax, that's a different vacation, and one I don't tend to choose.

Also, I didn't add it all up but it was probably around 10K all told. Moving from place to place makes vacations more expensive

Tip to others who want to enjoy travel: never add all the costs up. It kills the joy.

Well, most people do need to "add up all costs" so they can plan. It's called budgeting

Unbelievable.

Not really. Some of us have saved and are worth more so can now reasonably spend more. Just spent $25K+ on a 12 day trip to Europe, and another $30K+ on a 15 day trip a few months ago (this included an expensive event weekend so $4-5K spent on that alone). Airfare alone is $10-12K of each trip for the 2 of us. For us it's affordable, we planned well and now have enough to spend this. So we are, while we still can (we are mid 50s). Sure we can do it "cheaper" but why? We cannot take it with us.

It would be interesting to figure out how you did that because it would be about 1000 to fly in 2000 for hotels so you only had $1000 for spending money?

And $200/night for hotels in Italy is "really budget" IMO. It's all relative.

Same. Agreed. An incredible vacation, my kids still talk about it as their favorite trip ever.

Hmm. We just did this and I think it was more like 40-50 for a family of 4. With the Quito add on tour. It was a great trip but honestly I don’t know that it was 2-3 times better than some of the other trips we’ve taken such as Hawaii. Galapagos is not beautiful in the way Hawaii is and I think I saw more wildlife in other places—the thing about Galapagos is that the wildlife is somewhat weirder (like blue footed boobies). I’m not posting this to harsh your vibe but just so that other posters don’t feel bad about not being able to afford his kind of trip. I’m really not sure it’s the best bang for your buck.

HOW?[/quote

This is actually a pretty competitive rate… it’s all online, you can easily search rates. Realize most people don’t do the base trip ($15Kish) and usually upgrade the room type and that easily gets you to $25K pp

Equador? You grossly overpaid.

There is a mark up in "Equador" that does not exist in Ecuador.

After covid, I, a single mom, took my son on a fancy tour of Italy. We hadn't travelled for a few years and I just wanted it a) to be nice and b) I didn't wan't to do the planning, driving, etc. myself. Probably when all was said and done I spent about $12k. May do it again in a few years when he graduates from high school as a trip to another country he has always wanted to go to. We do local driving holidays at decent hotels most other years.

I want to know how much money you make to take $60K vacations. I think posters need to add this information.

Which ship?

Lindblad/Nat Geo

I hope people know that spending this much is not necessary to see the Galapagos.

I'm starting to feel the same. Also same net worth. Jeez. But we spent 8K for four people so same.

The thing is, we've had great trips. London with many live shows, Croatia, Paris, NYC many times and not on skimpy budgets. I had no idea I was such a budget traveller. You guys are making me feel better about my travel spending.

Honestly, I once worked as a group trip arranger and leader, so I almost never farm the "tour guide / travel agent" part of my trip out. I think that helps with the budge.

Go to the Lindblad website if you don’t believe me. Their trips always sell out.
