Spent zero.
One child at UVA and that one only asked for an English teacher to review the personsl statement essay.
Other child at LSE and that child utterly refused to show us any of their college applications. This child also refused any outside help, like that English teacher. This child got into 4 out of 5 UCAS schools.
To this day I have no idea what the personal statement contained.

Or if I have all of that extra money and 30k or 300k is nothing to me, I still don’t want to waste it on a college tour or a consultant.

I’d pay 5k to not have to get in the back and forth with my kid to meet deadlines if it came to that, more like a HW tutor. If I had unlimited money. Right now I’m planning on paying zero.

Honestly, I don't think you will be getting any useful "guidance" from these counseling service if you are on a 40k budget. Whatever advices you got from them will be generic. Just self-study the application process.

Command Education is charging 750K to get kids into Harvard.
I am sure whatever they put on their website is not going to worth much.

Is that guaranteed? A few years ago when we spoke to him, he had an idea for expanding one of DCs activities across several states. He thought Dc could get into Yale. We did not go with them and did nothing with that EC except continue it — DC is at Harvard!

However essay help had a hard end date, and after DC was rejected REA, DH and I had to help DC revamp applications, including most essays, for RD. Was admitted to a couple of HYPSM schools RD. We were shocked at how useless the essay help was in terms of producing effective essays even after trying to use one of the best. The only thing that was done was that the essays were completed. Waste of money!

From just what I see in the consultant infomercials, they use a well-organized, but mechanical format, easily recognized by AOs.

Fortunately, my DS writes well with distinctive storytelling voice, and did well without one, just me and DW, so not surprised your kid did well, too.

I’m a big consumer of college info. I honestly don’t think a consultant would add anything. But my kids know I know what I’m talking about. If I had a resistant kid to anything mom said, I can see a cheaper person to keep supps on track would be worth avoiding the mental strain

I don't think a consultant of any price would be much different than doing it yourself; it just depends on if you have the time, and if you would enjoy DIY.

we are the private school parents. we don't participate in those other threads and literally come here to read and learn (and rarely post).
at least that's me with an UHNW household.

I spent $25 on my daughter's consultant, Fiske Guide to Colleges.

So stupid. I’m wealthy and this is ridiculous…things like:

“During the tour, students are prepped with custom questions to ask during info sessions and campus tours: a practice that often makes a memorable impression with admissions staff.”

Only someone who has never been on a college tour would think this is an accurate statement. The AOs don’t know any individual person - even with a check in - who asks a stupid or insightful question.

I probably would, at that level.

At that level it does not matter where your kid goes to college.
