There are A LOT of in-state students and the culture shock of that was hard at first (MA is very different than the DMV and also, a lot of hs cliques replicated themselves on campus). There are a lot of different types of people though and lots of opportunities for those who are patient and persistent. The area is beautiful with a semi-rural/small college town feel. It's very charming but my kid does wish it were a little less remote (although he appreciated the opportunities to be in nature and the cuteness of Amherst and North Hampton).
In what ways is MA different from DMV?
Much more parochial. People who grew up in MA and rarely venture outside New England, except maybe to FL. Much more of a small town/small world place. Oddly, despite reputations to the contrary, friendlier. And sports obsessed.

What sort of merit aid is typical there?
My sample size of one says a high-stats OOS kid will get merit aid that will bring sticker price down to about $40k (all-in).
