In what ways is MA different from DMV?

Much more parochial. People who grew up in MA and rarely venture outside New England, except maybe to FL. Much more of a small town/small world place. Oddly, despite reputations to the contrary, friendlier. And sports obsessed.

This is so true. Funny, you’d think with the top-rated schools people would be well traveled, but it IS parochial. People live in the same towns they grew up in. I have friends in New England and they won’t even think about coming to visit. You’d think I live in a different planet.

Just like NYC is parochial sine they rarely venture out…

Umass -- when you like the feel of UConn, but don't want academic rigor.

I graduated from high school in Massachusetts in the mid-1970s. Back then, UMass was a last resort, even though tuition was something like $300 per academic YEAR, and its graduates seemed to do just fine in the job market. Glad to hear it’s getting more respect these days.

What sort of merit aid is typical there?

My sample size of one says a high-stats OOS kid will get merit aid that will bring sticker price down to about $40k (all-in).

My high but not super high stats kid got it down to about 30k. Yes expensive but it has been a really good experience.

Yeah, nobody cares. Let us know when UMass football claws its way up to mediocrity.

New England students and Eastern Canadians who go to a Massachusetts hockey school care.
