This is not the time to be moving to a smaller company

It's really hard to lateral when you are coming from an industry leading company-- the numbers dont make sense. Yet people take the risk.

Your best move is to go lateral at similar size company or go to VP at a MUCH smaller org.

This is great advice.

I am in the process of hiring a Director-level position for my Fortune 500 company.

We have had over 3000 applicants so far. Of those, my internal recruiter gave me 100 resumes to review. Of those, I narrowed it down to 15. HR will interview only 7.

So, if you have made it to the HR interview, you have done very well. At that point, I think it is likely they are looking for an easy “cultural” and personality fit.

As a general matter, it's much more likely to lateral into a similar role in a new company.

It's unlikely to get hired into a higher level than your current one at a new company. It makes no sense for them.
