Actually we are talking about a nose ring, which is an inanimate object.

People have said plenty of nice things about Erivo in this thread and the criticism has almost entirely been of her style choices or, rarely, her performance quality.

Yeah, I am not a fan of her in that role. I loved the book and like the musical. I find her Elphaba to be the wrong mix of vulnerability and steeliness. To be fair I'm just only so-so on Idina Menzel in the role, but at least I prefer her interpretations of the music. Nothing against Erivo's voice or acting -- I loved her in Harriet. Just wrong casting IMO (I like Ariana Grande even less, I think she's totally miscast and also don't think she's a good actress generally -- way too mannered and self-conscious).

I do not understand why people like that movie so much.

+1 To me this is not a Cynthia Erivo thing, it's a septum piercing thing. I've never seen one that looks good at all. Not on men or women! I think a regular nose piercing can range from inoffensive to really pretty, but the septum - why does anyone do that? Distracting, ugly, and strange enough that I question the person's judgment.


Agree. It’s not specific to her and I’m a boring old white lady who thinks she’s unbelievably talented and quite beautiful. I just don’t like the septum piercings on anyone. I don’t really know why I find them so distracting and offputting and I’m sure folks who have them give zero effs what I think.

It’s ok to not like someone’s style choices. It’s absurd to think we have to like every accessory and style. It’s also totally ok not to be a fan of her art. Why do you feel that’s dehumanizing her?

(Personally, I disapprove of her style choices entirely, especially the nose ring, because it emphasizes her nose, which is not her best feature... but that's entirely besides the point.)


I get that but the style choices she chooses seem intentionally off-putting. Her septum rings are often large and extremely eye catching, which forces you to look right at her nostrils in the middle of her face. That's an odd choice for an actor -- normally a performer would rather having you look at their eyes or their mouth, which are expressive features, rather than ones nostrils, which are not.

Likewise the excessive ear piercings do the same thing -- draw your eye away from her expression.

Her nails are insane, they look like claws. They don't draw you in or make you interested, they seem aggressive and hostile.

None of this makes sense from the perspective of a performer, especially an actor. It all says "get away, I'm unknowable and untouchable." She's an extraordinarily talented actress, but when I see photos of her these days I actually struggle to think of what she did before Wicked, because her current look is so aggressive and I exclusively associate it wither her promotion of Wicked and the intensity of her and Ariana during this time. That sucks because I actually loved her in Harriet and the Outsider. Those were nuanced, emotive performances. You would think she'd want to present herself in a way that invites more rolls like that. Maybe not. Maybe she just wants to make money now, I don't know. I think it's too bad.

I considered watching the Tony's, but when I heard she was hosting I skipped it. She's just too distracting to look at.

When someone is communicating, I want to focus on their eyes and facial expressions. This type of jewelry makes it harder to do that because it keeps drawing my eye to their nose and then I find that I've missed some of the words they were saying.

+2. She is a good singer. But there are many, many good singers on Broadway and the West End, and I don't see why she's been put on such a pedestal.

I used to really dislike septum piercings but somehow they grew on me. I knew one young woman who looked really good with it and then from there I just liked them more and more. Now they don't bother me.
