OP - this is what makes me nervous that we are nowhere near where we should be in terms of savings.

Lmao if you think having $15M at 40 is normal and where you should be at.

Anonymous wrote:I think it's low. I took several years off and have worked several years part time and my personal assets are close to 700k. That doesn't include home equity or my spouse's share of assets. We probably are close to 3 million all in combined. Spouse is planning on a military reserve and fed pension as well (since OP mentioned it).

No, it is not low. Just because you have more doesn't mean someone with 1.1M at 40 is doing poorly. Statistically it's well above average.

OP, ultimately NW doesn't matter. It's income from your investments + your pension + any SSI you and your spouse will receive that determines how well you can retire. Keep saving and investing and you'll be fine. You're doing great.

It’s easy to doubles money over 10 years even conservatively. Add the value of your pension, your set $7 M at 60. Trust is definitely enough.

My DH is 49 and I’m 43. We were at less that $1 M when he was 40. Now we’re at $2.9M.
We just save aggressively, live comfortably but below our means.

How did you come up with $2 million to value the pension?

Not the poster that you are asking. But they pretty much put the calculation there. You need ~$2m to generate the pension amount with the 4% withdrawal rate.

Similar experience here. ~$1m at 40 and over $3m a decade later.

We are quite similar except $1.4m is home equity. Still saving but spending on family vacations and similar until our kids don’t want to hang out with us anymore.
