DP. We live close to a metro. No one rides it because none of their activities have ever been near any metro stops. Unless you live near one stop and a HS or any activity happens to be by another metro stop, the metro isn’t going to be helpful. I’m the poster who said I live in the suburbs and haven’t ridden the metro in over ten years. It’s inconvenient with kids.
The metro was good when we were young and went out drinking in DC and were too poor for taxis. Long before we had kids.

I was in a similar situation (and living in a semi-rural area so no neighborhood carpools) and I paid a high school student to take my kid to practices and summer camps.

Son got my wife's used Honda HR-V and wife got new Honda CR-V. Daughter got used Hyundai Kona. So, yes, we did get two additional cars but simplifies our life quite a bit.

We live in an area where people live far apart and many kids attend different private schools so carpooling not possible. I know some families have FT nannies still to drive, cook, etc.
I will be away some of these times and can’t drive him.
Would you hire a nanny? Use uber teen?
Most high school sports teams have parent email lists or group chats. Once your son starts the sport you will be added and can see if there are older students who drive. I would take time off to get your kid there until you are looped in, then post on the list serve/group chat looking for carpools/paying an older student.

Uber is really dicey. Some drivers are absolutely fantastic and others a complete mess, from erratic driving to inappropriate talk. I definitely would not put a kid alone in one.
