Showing up for tryouts without prior exposure may be too late.
A lot of sports tryouts are a crap shoot if the coaches have no prior knowledge unless a boy is tall or super athletic. The few really tall/ athletic or talented players will stand out but that middle pack will run together.
Its FCPS public high school. They may be "tracking" whoever at tournaments, but you get to choose from who is in your school boundary who shows up for 9th grade. At least the scrupulous coaches.
How many kids usually try out for the freshman boys teams?

How many do they take?
That was my son last summer. He didn’t make the freshman team. I’m not sure exactly how many kids tried out…but there were a lot. The last day of tryouts they only had the top 20 kids come and my son made that cut. But not the eventual cut to 14. My son was one of 5 of the summer league kids didn’t make the team.
