I usually do a solid 2 weeks of summer vacation (either 1 2 week vacation or 2 1 week vacations) and then a long weekend here and there. Between a complicated kid summer schedule and worries about RIFs, this year is more low key. I seem to have survived the RIFs, but by the time that was clear, I was late on planning. I'm also reluctant to fly with all the ATC, so we're just doing a week at the beach (driving) and my daughter and I are doing a 3 day road trip while my son is at sleep away camp.

Usually a 1.5 week main vacation (flying), and then a few long weekends (beach, amusement parks).

I don't have a ton of PTO but our office is very flexible with how we use it (eg making up time from Dr appts instead of taking leave, WFH when waiting for contractors etc)

My husband is a partner in a law firm. He does not have to track or report PTO. Trust me, he’s working every vacation. No need to be jealous.

We are doing a 10 day trip to UK/France and a weeklong cruise with my in-laws. He will work at least some during both trips, I’m sure.

Yes but many people actually have no PTO. They don’t get paid if they don’t work. Your husband has the option to not be a partner at a big law firm. He’s probably being very well compensated for his “sacrifice” of working while in France.


You also have the option to not take a job that does not offer PTO. As someone with a job where I don't have to track or report PTO, the "compensation" for the roll never really replaces the sacrifice.

Long weekends at the beach is a vacation. We don't even do that.


Two nights is our financial max. I have to take off work to do it (which means no pay).

DH doesn't have PTO, he has "handle your S and other than that we don't care what, when or how your do it." He can do 90% of his job via text and email. To not interfere with family time he gets up early or stays up late vacation and does an hour to hour and a half on his laptop.

Hard to believe, but different people answer different posts. I’m pretty sure the Feds and adjacent-to-Fed workers who were/are worried about their jobs are not posting about owning 4 homes!

I feel like the responsibility of four houses cancels out your love of travel. Even if you are retired and have property managers, that is a lot to maintain. How can you find time to enjoy all four properties and still travel?


I am glad that pp has a 4 months long summer, since my summer is 3 months long.

I’m taking the same number of vacations but they are shorter and less expensive than usual. I did get much better deals on flights

We usually plan one vacation in August each year. This year we're doing a cruise, and then a few other long weekends throughout the summer, but those are mainly going to stay with friends or family.

I feel like the responsibility of four houses cancels out your love of travel. Even if you are retired and have property managers, that is a lot to maintain. How can you find time to enjoy all four properties and still travel?
