Abbot Elementary could fit the bill. Sheryl Lee Ralph alone makes that show worth watching.
Brooklyn 99, Andre Braugher was fantastic on it.
Grace and Frankie - goes a bit off the rails but the first season is worth watching.
Schitt's Creek - first season doesn't quite come together but the show takes off in the second season (particularly after Patrick shows up).
The US version of ghosts is awful.
The UK version is spectacular.
I really like the US and UK versions - they have very different tones. UK is a lot darker, US is a lot lighter, they are both very good.
I like the US version better, though I like the human couple better in the UK version.
I convinced my teen to watch it just a couple weeks ago
The US version is more feel good than the UK version. Both are fine shows worth watching, they're just different. The OP said they were looking for something more escapist and I'd say the US one is more fitting for that. They both get a wee bit repetitive, more the US one.

Anonymous wrote:Some of the snappiest writing I've ever seen in a sitcom was How I Met Your Mother. If you haven't seen it, it's similar to Friends with a gang of five friends in NYC. However, the story jumps back and forth in time and they have clever, long-running jokes that last for seasons. Very funny.
