It's fine that you assumed it was empty and sat down, but once he came over and said it was his table, you should have been the better person and give him his table back or invited him to join you

People work at all those places for hours. Totally normal. Just please don’t do it if it’s standing room only and people are clearly waiting for tables to open.

The moment newspaper guy came back to his table and explained the situation you and your wife should have apologized and gotten up to move to a different table.

You didn't handle the situation gracefully. Instead you and your wife acted rather entitled.

OP: I would have kept both the newspaper and the table while cheerfully stating "finders keepers". If he continued on, I would then have given him the full: "finders keepers, losers weepers" which, legally speaking, should end things once and for all in OP's favor.

If you can’t go 2 hours without drinking coffee than you have a serious problem. I am 100% remote and if I needed to leave my house for whatever reason, I wouldn’t spend several hours in a coffee shop, etc.

I also wouldn’t “reserve” a table with a newspaper. It’s first come first serve. Guy wasn’t there so too bad for him. But that doesn’t negate sitting at a table for 2 hours working from a coffee shop. Everyone in this story sucks for different reasons.
