What was the reasoning back in the day?
Back in biblical times, there were no microwaves to nuke the parasites and harmful bacteria in creatures which eat filth, feces, or feast on the dead. These animals God declared unclean to eat.
Similarly, God said not to wear mixed fabrics. Back in those days, there were no powerful detergents, no hot water rinse or steam cycles to destroy fleas and lice which hide and lay eggs in the gap between the two fabrics.
Note that there was no death sentence for eating unclean foods or wearing mixed fabrics but there was a death sentence for rape of a betrothed woman, homosexuality, and adultery.
And slavery! That was endorsed also! Don’t forget slavery!
And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.—Exodus 21:16
Those people who stole Africans to sell into slavery —mostly Arabs and other Africans, would have received the death penalty.
There is a big difference between becoming a slave out of economic necessity and being kidnapped.
Most people in biblical times were farmers and herdsmen. If your crops failed or were destroyed by war or drought, it was either become a slave or starve to death.
You should thank God every day for the blessed life you have.

Anonymous wrote:It was hot in Israel and Egypt. And no refrigeration. Pigs have a lot of parasites which are hard to kill. Granted the Spanish camr up with hot smoking to get jamon etc etc. Pigs were a staple food in the north as you could have one pregnant sow in winter to feeed, she's give you 5-6 piglets and they would eat all spring and summer and you can kill them and process meat to last you the winter. But pretty sure that all came later than the Old Testament dietary laws.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:One theory is that pigs reminded people long, long ago of humans. We rummaged for food, so did pigs. They ate everything they had, so did we.
+1
Humans are sometimes called long pig. And animal testing used to test products on pigs because it was so close to humans

That's just some made up nonsense created centuries after Jesus's life
No, Jesus himself said, "it doesn't matter what goes into your mouth, what matters is what comes out of your mouth." Then Paul, if you accept his letters, made sure the new churches didn't go back to dietary rules.
He never said that. The author of the gospels is an anonymous person who probably never met Jesus. Why would he practice one thing and preach another?
The book of Mark is the oldest and was written about 30 years after Christs death.
He had been one of the disciples
The authorship of Mark is inconclusive.
What is known is that it was written about 70 ad, Christ was born around 2 or 3 ad. Died about the age of 35
Mark the evangelist or mark the disciple.
