i am a law firm partner and spouse is cfo of a public company. we don’t have the time or budget to travel like some of these posters.

All the law firm partners I know at top firms do this.

We leave around 8am, stop for lunch and get there by dinner. We usually only stay a night or two and head to a different destination which in the past has included Toronto, Pittsburgh, Chicago. We like it enough to drive out of the way for it.

Another NP, but wow I didn’t know that! I’ve been there once for a wedding, and that aspect was definitely turned up at the venue (“[So-and-so] Plantation” on the invitation). I think ppl (bride/‘s family etc) want to emulate UC vibes, except that in the South, that is very likely to be tied to slavery. Clearly no one was thinking about that aspect as much as they were really focused on having a “classy” wedding

From the DC area we do a lot of weekend trips on repeat annually- Phily, Miami, Chicago, Hyatt Chesapeake Bay, WV. NYC probably every 2-3 years. We then take a 2 week trip in the summer, also spring break and winter break. I get 6 weeks vacation a year.

Lots of law partners work remotely all summer.

Perhaps people should add their budgets for each of these. Except for the family trips staying with relatives, they seem like the $$$ would be quite high (and dependent on size of the party). No way could we have done that while working; neither the budget nor the job responsibilities would have allowed it. Plus we did enjoy seeing different locations most years. We're currently young retirees and spending $40-60 K/year on travel (usually about 5-6 weeks divided into 4-5 trips) while we are healthy enough to travel. Sometimes that includes paying for or subsidizing younger family members. I thought that was a generous budget, yet we're constantly barraged by cruise brochures that would use up that budget in a single "luxe" trip. Apart from the eye candy, we've not indulged in those as yet.

Typically a Disney cruise is the one thing we do each year or every 18 months, as our relaxing vacation, separate from our trips to other places that typically aren't as relaxing (posting this from our UK for spring break, for example).

This is a fun topic. We spend a week every summer in Grand Teton National Park. Beyond that, we tend to cycle trips every 2-3 years with new destinations in between. Like a PP, my kids and partner are way happier (and thus, relaxed!) on trips that are familiar and chill. Repeat trips fit into that: Disneyland (not chill, but much loved), UT skiing, Mexico, Hawaii, Tennessee. Now that our kids are in elementary school and better travelers I am excited to take them to Japan, Europe, and Peru.

Disney for us as well, alternating between World, Land, and cruises.
