Even the cold is not bad. Wind is a problem. but temperatures rarely ever go below 30 degrees. Most of the northern US is MUCH MUCH MUCH colder than St Andrews.
There is less annual rainfall in St Andrews than NYC…..
The early sunsets in the winter is tough. But that is about it.
But one more reason to NOT go there without first visiting.

“MUCH MUCH MUCH colder” is overstating the weather difference. I spent a year there as a grad student, & the winter was no picnic. It seemed roughly about like the weather in the DC or Philadelphia areas. There was some snow & a lot of rain. Umbrellas were a common sight.

Thank you. As with many other schools, at admitted days their reps are citing a large increase in application volume this year.

You can get to St Andrews and back twice a year for less than $1000 each way. Say add$3k. It is still a great deal at $43k vs a lot of privates in the US. Also room and board is cheaper than most t60 Privates where room and board is approaching $20k.[/quot
Without transport it's about 55k a year no? For room board and tuition?
Room and Board depends what type of dorm you secure. But the cheapest option is about 6k lbs. That is $7700.
In DOLLARS:
$40k Tuition
$8k Room and Board
$48k
Still a lot cheaper than the typical SLAC or PRivate with 35k of Merit Aid per year.
Where do you get 8K for room and board?
Here is says room/board is about 15K for 2024-5 https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/students/money/internationalstudents/ugcoa/
We are seriousy considering this but cost is important if you can help clarify??
I'm interested too in figuring out rough 'all in' cost of St. A. We have not visited; D accepted and need to decide, possibly w/o a visit.
As someone whose kid is also in, if you can, I highly suggest you go visit. The town is not for everybody. It clicked with my son the moment he sat foot in the place in ways that very few US schools did. But I would not recommend selecting the next 4 years of my life without visiting.
Thanks- from another parent whose kid is considering but the kid doesn't think a visit is needed
Had a child attended as a part of the W&M joint degree program with St Andrews. Overall a positive experience and had briefly visited St Andrews a few years before attending.
Quaint little town, emphasis on little, three streets. Biggest challenge and one a prospective student should consider is location. Much farther north than most US residents. So cold and rainy with occasional dusting of snow. Biggest issue is daylight. It can be rough getting out of class at 2 or 3 in the afternoon and it is dark. Not the place for those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
