The lack of a degree or two will probably hinder his progress up the corporate ladder, if that’s a goal. He will probably regret not having them when he’s older.

Well, I actually think a lot about this because I recruit for the jobs. A good internship or workforce training program is sometimes enough. And since you mentioned he's 19 with no education or experience, I imagine that any pay is good pay. Average rate is $25/hr.

I'd encourage him to re-think his aversion to military service. As a tech worker, he's not going to be on the front lines with a rifle or operating a main battle tank close to enemy lines. He'll get more training, be able to get more certifications, and will qualify for future educational benefits if he decides on higher education after a period of maturation. If the military turns out to not be satisfying professionally, the experience will still provide a substantial boost to his resume when looking for civilian employment.
