On the bright side, I am learning to cook just about anything I want. It's not perfect but close enough that I don't miss those things I used to get going out. To that I am wondering who here can still afford to eat out, and if so, do you feel like you're getting ripped off?

I only go out at happy hour for the food specials.

Agree. Tipping is just throwing money away. It's not my job to pay some guys bills cause he made the wrong career choice.

There’s a special place in hell for both of you! You actually cost the servers money to take care of you (yes, they have to “tip out” the support staff whether or not you tip).

I have a tip for you.
You're a loser

Tipping is the way the wealthy put the risk of operating a business onto the poor people. They pay waiters $3.50 an hour to hope that you people make up the difference. Cheaper to operate that way. If you care about equality, don't tip.

Oh, please. All you’re doing is stiffing the little guy, unless you talk to the restaurant owner and tell him or her exactly why you’re not tipping. You’re being cheap under the guise of caring about the plight of the worker. Trust me, no server is going to thank you for not tipping.

This. Do you work for free?

We almost never eat at a restaurant. We get takeout maybe once a week - pho, tacos etc. but even that is expensive.

Are you posting from DC? People here are rich from 25 years of war, concentration of the nation's wealth, revolving doors, fake jobs, fake nonprofits, etc. And most are swiping a company credit card when they go out to eat, so it doesn't actually cost them a thing.

This isn’t true at all. Where are you getting this nonsense?

Everyone has an LLC. Everyone is writing off dining or expensing meals. Only total suckers are swiping personal cards at restaurants.

Calm down, Mavis. The question applies to all purchased meals, not just dinner.

I am with OP. I make well enough to eat out whenever I want, but avoid it most of the time. Even if I can afford something, that doesn't make it a good value. I do my own cooking and I am the richer for it.

In fact, food has always cost “more” for me because I tip a lot.

I don’t even notice what dinner costs. I just do the tip arithmetic and sign.

Again, not trying to be harsh, just in the spirit of anonymous dcum honesty.

The lawyers and doctor's (or their wives) chime in!

Did you know that women can be doctors and lawyers these days? We even have the vote!

You probably shouldn’t go to a restaurant more than once, otherwise you’ll probably get some boogers in your food. And the waiter might make a point of not washing their hands after going to the bathroom.

Comments like these make people really avoid restaurants even more. I tip, but - really? What kind of sociopath spits in other people’s food just because they feel they didn’t get enough tip? Are you insinuating that waiters generally are sociopathic?

They are too dumb to realize they are hurting themselves. Maybe that explains what they do for living

But it’s not really worth it. I just make good stuff at home and I splurge on a Hello Fresh box maybe 1x per month.

Tuna casserole is in the oven right now. Definitely under $10 for 5-6 people.

I love me some tuna casserole! My fav comfort food!

So awful. I can’t believe people still eat this.
