And people wonder why teachers are leaving in droves. Who would want to deal with these insufferable parents who think they exist to babysit?

The snow days are completely unrelated to tomorrow’s closure. Teachers could not possibly have used the snow days to complete grades because students had not turned in assignments yet.

OP, this is not about MCPS. This is about you being stretched too thin and stressed out. I don’t know if it’s a financial issue or other issue but you really should take a beat and examine why you don’t have the resources to manage when the schools close for a couple of days. It sounds like you have a job with no flexibility, no family or neighborhood suooort, no money to throw at the problem….is that right? If so, I’m really sorry but that’s not really a sustainable way to raise a family. You need to have some type of wiggle room. Because sh-t happens.

I guess only a minor few of us, maybe only me, have to deal with incredible stress because of MCPS' idiotic snow policies. F MCPS!!

I hope you see this as a learning experience. Next year, sit down in August and look at the calendar and write down the days off ahead of time. Then put it on your to do list to figure out what to do with your kids.

Teacher planning days or grading days are not new. They shouldn’t be some horrible shock to you.

Now take some deep breaths, make sure you see some daylight today and soak in some vitamin D. You sound stressed. But this is not the fault of the school system.

It’s not a day off for teachers. It’s a day to grade all late work, submit grades for 150+ students and then plan for next quarter. Not nearly enough time.

Several of our hs teachers worked snow days. They gave assignments and were answering emails for support. They also grade nights and weekends. You can see based off the alerts. What does the snow have to do with Wednesday off.

The schedule for this week has been known since the board approved the calendar in December 2023. If you haven't figured out how to cope with it yet with 13 months notice, that's entirely your problem. So yes, it is just you.

The day to enter grades is a legacy from pre-digital grade book.
I don't mind the kids having a day off but if you haven't graded work before the last day of the semester that's your own poor planing.

This is true. Most of the teachers I know don't need to spend the grading day actually doing grades. It's basically a day off for them-which many of them deserve!

It certainly isn’t a day off for high school teachers.

Seriously!
Teachers get a week of preservice to prep for semester 1.
And ONE DAY that is combined with finalizing MP 2 grades to prep for semester 2. 🙄

It's not (most) teachers' poor planning. Teachers are required to take late work up until the end of their duty day on Tuesday. This can result in hundreds of late papers needed to be graded and put into the gradebook by the time the gradebook closes. That does not even take into account all of the other things that need to be done, especially in high school, to prep for the change of semester.

A-freaking men.

And all those snow days just made for more work coming in last minute.

And of course OP would be complaining if their kid’s teachers cut things off earlier to get the grading done sooner and their little darling wasn’t learning/being productive until the very end of the semester. Troll.

In NYC, schools are closed too for Lunar New Year. It's about damned time since the city's had Rosh Hoshanah, Eid Il Ftr, Yom Kippur, Italian heritage and Diwali for years.

I went to public school in the 80s in na red state and even we closed for a day at the end of every quarter so the teachers could finish grades and prep for next quarter. I’m wondering if OP went to private school or is from another country. This is super normal.
If you’re jammed for child care there are tons of companies running schools out programs, or you could hire a HS student for the day.

After closing schools for 3 days after a snow - for no reason at all, they now want another day off?

Awful. Embarrassing. Idiots. Morons.

Can someone sign an executive order to fire all the people in charge at MCPS?

Bad news for you: FCPS is doing it too. So the two largest systems in the area are doing it... maybe just suck it up like the rest of us.

You are the idiot. Reading comprehension is important. Feel bad that your kids have a parent who struggles with common sense.

Not just high school.

My MS students finished their unit projects today. They’ve spent weeks research and writing. The three snow days and the late opening slowed us down.

I really do grade for accuracy and checking that takes a long time for 150 students.
