Whatever happens longer term will advise my younger kids and classmates not to EA to Michigan. No need to waste time and stress on an institution that doesn't in fact do a real EA process (having heard last year and this year from fellow student and parents). Was on the fence with this kid as had heard of the very high deferral EA later to be admitted, and wish my DD hadn't wanted her time on this. Oh well, lesson learned.
I should caveat that I'd still recommend that students apply EA if they are URM. Last year and this year (based this year on a half dozen or so I've just heard about so not sure overall for this year) seems to make a BIG difference in the EA admissions (like URM kids with substantially lower GPAs and course difficulty being admitted EA, with (at least last year) much more of a balance in considering non-race factors in the ultimate regular decision admits). Like depending on a kid's race/ethnicity, they'd be admitted with second-tier (but still strong) courses, and mid-to-low- extracurriculars for black/Hispanic kids verses high GPAs/test scores and course difficulty and, time-consuming extracurriculars and engagement deferrals for white and Asian kids. Based on my limited experience last year, Michigan was the most extreme in this differential based on race/ethnicity in the EA round.
A long-winded asinine "An "unqualified" URM took / will take my spot" post.

UMich stopped using affirmative action, like the Cal schools, in their admissions processes years ago. DEI is not just about race but everyone seems to want to make it seem that way or that DEI = no merit. And affirmative action benefitted white women the most.
They claim they did. But there're reasons to believe they didn't.

Yes. First lesson about the University of Michigan: they just *have* to be different. If every other institution on the planet says "deferred," they'll use "postponed" instead.
I think UVA takes the cake with that one - “grounds” instead of campus and “first years”’instead of freshmen. So pretentious.
