This is a thread about UMich. That’s what it takes to have a shot there. And APs raise GPAs. I have not seen grade inflation at my kids’ schools though- it’s not universal.

No need to waste time and stress on an institution that doesn't in fact do a real EA process (having heard last year and this year from fellow student and parents). Was on the fence with this kid as had heard of the very high deferral EA later to be admitted, and wish my DD hadn't wanted her time on this. Oh well, lesson learned.

I should caveat that I'd still recommend that students apply EA if they are URM. Last year and this year (based this year on a half dozen or so I've just heard about so not sure overall for this year) seems to make a BIG difference in the EA admissions (like URM kids with substantially lower GPAs and course difficulty being admitted EA, with (at least last year) much more of a balance in considering non-race factors in the ultimate regular decision admits). Like depending on a kid's race/ethnicity, they'd be admitted with second-tier (but still strong) courses, and mid-to-low- extracurriculars for black/Hispanic kids verses high GPAs/test scores and course difficulty and, time-consuming extracurriculars and engagement deferrals for white and Asian kids. Based on my limited experience last year, Michigan was the most extreme in this differential based on race/ethnicity in the EA round.

A long-winded asinine "An "unqualified" URM took / will take my spot" post.

No, not that at all. My kid who applied last year was eventually admitted and went elsewhere. My kid deferred today may or may not get in eventually. In the end (meaning with regular admissions taken into account) things seemed at least last year to even out a bit more in terms of being a bit more similar to other schools in terms of URM (some overall URM bump but not overall huge). That's not a judgment, it's descriptive based on my limited experience. I'd assume there are also other bumps, but as someone unhooked at UofM EA seems pretty unlikely (but not impossible) generally but easier if a URM in the early round.

UMich stopped using affirmative action, like the Cal schools, in their admissions processes years ago. DEI is not just about race but everyone seems to want to make it seem that way or that DEI = no merit. And affirmative action benefitted white women the most.

They claim they did. But there're reasons to believe they didn't.

Yes I think their mandatory essay indicates they take it into account.

Yes. First lesson about the University of Michigan: they just *have* to be different. If every other institution on the planet says "deferred," they'll use "postponed" instead.

I think UVA takes the cake with that one - “grounds” instead of campus and “first years”’instead of freshmen. So pretentious.

Lots of schools use first years instead of freshman. Not a UVA thing.

Every year, people misinterpret the “postponed” language. I know this straight from UM admissions as I work with them as an alumni. Postponed= deferred. They did look at all applications, they did not run out of time.

Kid got accepted. Strong private outside of Baltimore. 34 ACT, 3.95 UW, strong EC, legacy. College counselor thought he'd get deferred to RD but ended up getting accepted. Applied to LSA Residential College.

Yes, grades are hugely inflated these days. Do you not have a kid in high school?
