Yes, the UGA honors program is top ranked (someone posted a link a while back) and they do very well with med placement. Athens is the real deal in a variety of ways. In-state tuition for an out-of-state student might be difficult to pass up unless there are better in-state options available. Would be hard to pass this up.

UGA is a great school. I have one oos kid who graduated and one oos kid who is there now. They LOVE Athens, UGA, their friends, classes have been great.
Pre-med advising is terrible, courses do not offer a ton of interaction with faculty/hence faculty recs not great, not much research, very difficult to get shadowing or even volunteer work in Athens since it is such a small town. (The hospitals open up slots for volunteering 6 months in advance and they are gone in 30 seconds). We do know a few kids who have gone to med. school - it's not impossible, but it takes a lot of work on students part, in addition to the usual intelligence and work ethic needed to survive those early chem classes (which are taught in large classrooms and definitely weed out).

And don't forget to factor in the cost of travel to get to/from home. You're in MD? Flights home will cost $XYZ especially since it will presumably be during peak holiday travel.

A lot of kids in Georgia would love to go to UGA, and many who don’t get in the first year do what they can to transfer in. UGA really offers the whole package.
