Putting the politics of all this aside (save it for the politics forum), I can’t be the only one here who used TT for the dopamine spike. What are you going to do while TikTok is down. More to other sites? Read? Hang on DCUM longer?

Get some hobbies, friends, hooks, gym class membership, plan a short or long trip so you have something to look FW too. Talk with friends when you take walks. Books or audio books. Volunteer

Get out of the house at least once a day.

Smile and look people in the eye. Say Hello to 5 people a day.

Basically, do real human stuff.

Okay this could have happened on YouTube as well. Wasn’t Justin Bieber first noticed on a YouTube video? And that singer with the Patti Labelle “Patti pies” singing its praises became a backup singer because of his YouTube breakout fandom singing about the pies. What was unique about tic toc that is making people lose their minds when there is concern about national security. I honestly don’t get it and nobody has been able to help me understand the angst.

The national security concerns are way overblown. If they were worried about China having access to information they would ban their shopping apps too. The olds in Congress don't understand any of this. This is about American social media companies not wanting the competition. And it is TikTok.

TikTok security concerns have been spelled out in detail. No one who uses this app has the attention span to read all the way through and remember.

Temp and all the other junk sites operate differently.

It was an actual official act of Congress that got rid of Tic Toc. Something unusual for Congress in the last perhaps ten or twenty years. An executive order cannot override legislation. Trump would have to get Congress to reverse itself. It’s not even a judicial decision because the matter has already been litigated up the chain and defeated.

You don't know what you are talking about. I mean this nicely.
okay. And I too mean this nicely. What is it that I dont understand. Was it not a congressional bill that was signed by Biden that banned tic toc? Did not tic toc litigate this ban all the way to scotus and lose? Are you saying the potus can say “ef Congress and scotus and override a law just for the gell of it? What other laws can be overridden with a stroke of an EO and why do we even need Congress if it’s that easy. TIA for your nice and sincere response

Anonymous wrote:Can you explain how "TikTok has been shutoff [sic]"?

Is there an agency that performed this function today (Sunday)? What did that entail? Is this the first app/website (which? both) that Americans cannot access? Is it just removed from App stores or all DNS servers have removed the mappings? All DNS servers in the US? What about VPN?

Tiktok themselves shut off American access and usage early than they needed to even after the Biden administration said it would not enforce the ban. TT did this to strike fear and outrage in the hearts of the users so that they protest even louder than they have been this last week. And TT thanked "President Trump" in the message that went out to 170 millions Americans in order to 1) hold his feet to the fire for whatever he promised TT he would do and 2) flatter him so he gives them what they want.

The worst and most likely outcome is that Trump will work with TT who will eventually sell out its users by giving control of the app to some right wing American billionaires who will turn it into another RW propaganda machine.

The whole thing is insane.

Exactly this. I’m sure Zuckerberg, Bezos and Musk are all jockeying for the opportunity to buy it.

I’ll trade having a little less China spying and mind control for losing a few jobs

This is quite wrong. Both sentences.
