What gets me is my neighbors paying for 6 guys shoveling their driveway and walkway but not having the sidewalk cleared! McMansion on single lot.

I shoveled my sidewalk, my neighbor’s sidewalk, our long driveway and part of my neighbor’s driveway - our driveways are next to each other, so they need to switch over to our driveway for the second half. I got tired.

I’m a good neighbor and I often do my neighbor’s sidewalk, but this storm exceeded my capacity. It’s a lot for your average middle aged adult to do more than one house in this situation. One year I gave myself shoulder bursitis and now I’m a lot more careful.

Wow, thanks for chiming in about this one instance that doesn't really apply to the conversation about how much snow shoveling costs.

NP. If you let teens do it, or have teens, please make sure they know not to use shovels on windshields or on the car’s actual surface. I let teens do my driveway and cars once, and I didn’t watch them and one used his shovel on my car. Guess whose car had multiple scratches on the paint and windshield after that?

Not everyone has areas suitable for a snow blower. Elevated decks, narrow side walkways, around car in driveway. Wait till you're old. Lots of ableism here.

Or you could learn some very basic home maintenance skills and diy.

I see nothing ethically wrong with skilled trades people upcharging wealthy people who disdain tradesmen, but are too important to learn the skills themselves.

What's to learn? Everyone knows how to shovel snow and $450 buys a decent snow blower that just as easy to operate. If the HHI people are willing to pay, then I agree with you. Let them charge whatever the market will bear.

My 13 year old and his friends are out charging $30 a driveway - though I made him do our elderly neighbor’s for free. He’s been getting great tips on top of that.

We all do it ourselves in my Silver Spring MC / UMC neighborhood. Toasting each other with beers while we sweat and the little kids "helping out" while sipping hot chocolates.

Snow days are party days!

DP. I respect those here who appreciate hard work and want to be generous. This is a dry time of year for most of our landscapers, who we'll see again come spring.
