When I was 15 I was listening to Garth Brooks…I remember Calling Baton Rouge and Much Too Young to Feel This Dam* Old. My taste has since improved, but are teenagers really listening to songs about vibrators? I don’t think I knew what a vibrator was at that age.

“Music with profanity or descriptions of sex acts is not appropriate for a five year old. I’m sure we can agree on that. As such, this music will not be played when a five year old is present.”

This is what my 15yo listens to tooo, but she's very conscious of what is played while her siblings are around. Often she's more careful than I am.

Why not have an honest conversation instead of embarrassing yourself to your daughter?


I’m not embarrassed, that’s why I ask the questions. My point is, if my daughter wants to listen to songs about adult toys in my presence then she should be comfortable discussing the topic with me. She isn’t so she changes the song. Everyone is happy.

I hated children’s music and never ever listened to it. I always played music I liked with the kids in the car and at home (a very wide selection of genres) in the car I always said, when mom is in the car the mom gets to pick the music. I have a driving teen who still lets me pick the music we listen to when I’m in the car. I never censored my kids music.

I'm not sure I'd make her stop listening to those songs, but do think there should be some conversation about compromise (the car being a place where everyone gets to enjoy the music), conversation about what is appropriate for younger kids, and conversation about radio edits...I think kids generally don't understand that some words are taboo, are not acceptable for school or work, having charged meanings, etc.
