It is legal in MD for underage children to drink at their home under supervision of their parent. So you are wrong, it is not illegal.

How did this conversation even come up?

The parents don’t drink so presumably there wouldn’t be beer in the house. Are you debating stocking your fridge with an assortment of beer “just in case.” Is this a test?

We only drink a countable number of drinks per year, 1 or 2 in front of our kids.

Parental example is very tied to outcomes.

Alcohol is a highly optional part of life and is not needed to have fun. Many beverages are equally refreshing.

PP. I'd say you are setting a good example of people who can socialize with a mixture of drinkers and non-drinkers. That's exactly what I mean by parental example.
