The Booker prize is not some magical guarantee of being the best book ever. There are plenty of years when the actual winner is a total dud (in my opinion) and there are other nominations that are good to the point of being stunning.

It’s not a children’s swim team where one kid gets the fastest time and we can agree they’re the winner. Literature is subjective and judging it is pretty silly if you think about it too hard. I don’t see why having SJP as a judge is any different than any other arbitrary choices being made during the process.

And not that it matters, but can confirm from work in tv and film in NYC that she is a voracious reader with good taste, even in the comp set of fellow NYers who are snobby and deliberate about those sorts of things.

Well, let’s be honest. In the world we are in, they need to bring in eyeballs and interest to sustain this prize. So, this is a way to do it. Better than a completely uninterested celeb. I’m ok with it.
