Can I ask what school your dc applied to at uva and Michigan? Public school high school? Stats?

Applied to Engineering/CS for both UMich and UVa from FCPS. SAT 1580 (800 math) and GPA 4.3

Was the 4.3 at the end of senior year or at the time of application?

It really doesn't matter - a 4.3 is too low to get into UVA unless hooked. SCHEV reports that the 75th percentile of the entering class this fall had a 4.5 or better GPA. Even the median had a 4.4.

Obviously, UVA is yield protecting.

No they aren’t, shut up.

Not PP but their data says otherwise. I agree.

UVA does not need to yield protect and there is no evidence that they do. As with any other college accused of this, it's all idiotic speculation. Shut up.

University of Oklahoma. They offer incredible merit - will not cost our family much OOS.

Is Michigan the same size school or same size of engineering programs? Curious how they compare in spots.

Obviously, UVA is yield protecting.

Anonymous wrote:I asked because I’ve heard of a few people accepted to Michigan and not uva for engineering. Crazy. But sounds like your dc is doing great.

it is because UVA Engineering is a tougher admit than UVA A&S, and from VA high schools DeanJ and the rest of admissions know a ton of details on weighted GPA ranges, curriculum rigor options, and can spot slight dodgers of rigor. 1580 is very high; 4.3W is NOT in the top 25% at most virginia public high schools, so no UVA admission because UVA takes from the top 10% from most publics. For Michigan, they are not going to be as aware of relative rigor and GPA because they do not know VA schools as well, and only a few kids apply to Michigan each year so it is hard to have data.
