Did you even look at the sample calendar? There’s still a summer break, it’s just 5-6 weeks instead of 8+.

Yes, but I much prefer a longer summer break that makes it easier to coordinate and travel with family in other districts.

The year round calendar had the majority of summer break in June with school restarting in mid July. Not ideal in any way.

Consider how miserably hot July and August are and how little you can actually be outside for a lot of the day during those months. Now add 2 weeks off in late September, 2 weeks in April for spring break and a 3 week break in December/January. Such a no brainer for me. So many more opportunities to enjoy time off vs 8+ weeks in 103 degree heat. I think it will be very popular with many families and staff.

Omg, yes! These old calendars are not taking into account the weather! We have had no snow for years. Summer is getting hotter and hotter. Couldn’t believe how many outdoor camps had to be canceled in our county this summer. Then scrambling to move some indoors. You can’t even enjoy the pool if it’s 110 degrees out. And most people still have to work.

2 week breaks each in Spring and Fall and a 3 week one in Dec/Jan? Off school most of June and July until the first or second week of August? Sign us up!!!

Where do you live? Because it snowed in DC LAST winter (& the one before that). Also, the highest temperature on record in DC ever was 106F. So, it’s not 110F. Sure, summers are getting hotter, but this post has so much hyperbole.

Quibbling about the difference between 106 and 110 is goofy. This summer there were 2 weeks of “heat dome” days where the temp was 103 but the real feel with the wet bulb temp was above 110. It was awful and we couldn’t spend much time outside during the day those weeks. You’re being disingenuous.

Yeah, it’s hot in the summer in DC. It has always been hot, and it’s still hot in September. And already hot in June. So not sure how that’s relevant to school calendars. And how about the lies about no snow?

We haven’t had a big snowstorm that truly requires schools to close for multiple sequential days in a long while. Certainly nothing like a blizzard in a decade. Teacher opinion, we should reduce the amount of extra hours in our calendar that can be allotted as snow days and end a few days earlier. Especially because the SOL calendar is in May.

This just isn’t true. 3 years ago, APS closed for a whole week, or close to it, right after winter break, due to snow. In 2016, there WAS a blizzard that closed school for close to two weeks. People love this “it doesn’t snow anymore” narrative, but the facts don’t support it.

LCPS had one snow day in 22-23 and 5 in 21-22.

LCPS builds in more than two extra weeks of snow days (by hours) when we haven’t genuinely needed THAT many snow days in years. We could end school a week early in June and still be able to take snow days when they are needed.

There was a nice 6-10" snowfall in January '22 (on a Monday). There was concurrently a bit of a COVID surge post-holidays so the districts went overkill on the days off. That was an anomalous situation.

It's never made sense to me why our kids go so long.

For reference, my nieces in CA started school 08/12/2024 and get out 05/22 or 05/23/2025. They started only a week and a half before, but they get out 3 weeks earlier! And their school days are much shorter as well. I believe they start (in high school) at 8:30 and get out of school at 2:45.

My sister's kids in AZ started Aug 7 and will get out on May 22. School starts at 9 and gets out at 3:30. The kids can come from 8:30-9 for free breakfast for all, too.

Going 9:30 to 4:20 is such a long day and I hardly see my HS kid. She's always still asleep or just getting up when I leave for work, so at the most I see her for 15 minutes before school. I get home at around 6 and she doesn't get home from after school sports/activities until 7 or 8 or later if it's a game night. Then it's HW, studying, shower, and dinner... it's all a blur. I stayed with my sister in AZ recently while on a work trip and it was so calm after school, and they always got to eat as a family because sports and activities were all finished by 7 pm if not earlier.

This!! All of this.

Odd that they would deviate from neighboring counties so much. Anyone have any insight into this?

I don’t have insight, but I like this! Would pick #3, or 4. I hate that Arlington (and FFX?) enshrined going to school until nearly the end of June, only worsened by the large amount of half days sprinkled in, and way too many single days off in the middle of the week (FFX at least tries to consolidate, or so it seems).

You guys know that year round school is still only 180 school days, right? And only 195 teacher workdays?
