Yup! It's also a 3.5-4 hour Drive to Minneapolis. Easy drive
However, once you get outside the Madison circle, it is rural. I know---my kid lives there. But that is how most of the midwest is as well when you exit the suburbs of a big city it gets "rural" fast. But yes, Madison is easy to get to/from many other large cities fast

Seriously I’m sick to death of these dumb bad take on state universities. Look at the states you’ve listed, they have double, triple, and even quintuple the amount of people that Wisconsin has. This naturally makes them more competitive. BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE BETTER. Look at the department ranks for each and compare them to Wisconsin. Not even close. History, chemistry, English, history, math, economics, Wisco is better than all these schools.
A school like Florida does no important research, contributes nothing to society, and is only elevated by having 20 MILLION more people than Wisconsin is. Can you do math??

This is the 21st century, it has better department NOW. I don’t get why employers and prospective students just ignore this. UW has such a mid reputation now, probably because it’s run by Wisconsinites who don’t care about prestige or giving their students good paying jobs. OOS students pay good money to go to this school, and being known as “Michigan’s backup” isn’t good enough. Why does UW always have the most incompetent administration.

If the top ranked school was actually an outpost on the moon, would you send your kid there?
Other than Michigan, I would go to UW over any of those other schools.

Yes, their are direct flights, amd, they cost a fortune compared to flying into Milwaukee and renting a car for the drive. Even with the cost of a rental, it's cheaper to fly into Milwaukee

I’m telling you that’s how most people feel about Wisconsin. The bad perception of Wisconsin vs Michigan as states is much greater than the perception of the two state flagships. Madison and Michigan are seen as national universities, but if you live in Wisconsin you’re a drunk. On the other hand, if you live in Michigan there is no negative stereotype; in fact Ann Arbor residents are considered quite prestigious.
I have lived in several states & foreign countries, but have spent most of my life in the Detroit area, which I like very much. It is in general uncrowded, sane, & unpretentious (180 degrees opposite from DMV, NYC, SOCAL). But my coastal friends think I am insane for living in such a cold and unglamorous place.
Yes, Cheeseheads DO have a rep for drinking enormous amounts of beer. But since when is that a BAD thing?

Weird because my kid goes there and I fly direct all the time out of DCA. And I was there last Sunday and had dinner reservations at 8:30, and there were ones available after that.
UW Madison is 15 min. from the airport. Madison is the capital of the state. It's not "urban" the way that NYU or BU is. I have other children that attend colleges in cities that are more vibrant, but it's definitely not rural. or in the middle of nowhere. 15 minutes from an airport is great - makes move in/out and coming home for breaks much easier. Which was one minus in the UGA column when that was on the table.

Madison is like a small town though. Flights there are expensive and not often direct. I went there once for a work trip. I arrived at 8 pm on a Sunday and nothing was open for dinner.

yup! You can literally drive from Madison to Milwaukee in about 75 mins---I know my kid who graduated college in Milwaukee lives in Madison now. And most friends from college are still in MKE---You can make it in less than 75 mins if there are no cops out patrolling

Noah went to Florida and no one vacations in Gainesville either. And college isn’t a vacation.
I went to Cleveland on vacation…Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, boat tours, theatres, stadium… it was great! But then again, my kid wants to go to Madison, so… Not totally crazy UVA #1 choice but I do not think he will get in!
