I am getting back into reading for fun for 2025. I am an academic (History) and I find it tedious to read all of the time.

My favourites:

The Josephine B Trilogy
(Part of the Josephine Bonaparte Series) by Sandra Gulland

Susan Sontag’s The Volcanoe Lover - it’s about Lord Nelson’s mistress when he was serving in Italy

Gore Vidal has written a lot of great historical fiction. My favorite Vidal novel is Julian.

Hilary Mantel's books are amazing. The Wolf Hall trilogy and A Place of Greater Safety.
I also love Amitav Ghosh - The Glass Palace is my favorite, but the Ibis trilogy is also good.

I read Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon on DCUM recommendation and really enjoyed it.

This one has a bit of mythical angle but I enjoyed the details about viking era living in The Weaver and the Witch Queen by Genevieve Gornichec.

I’ll add that I enjoyed The Vaster Wilds (and The Matrix is on my list to read). It was a sad but good, fast read.

I liked Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, by the same author as Wicked. It takes place in Holland during tulip madness.

Richard Mason has a book called Who Killed Piet Barol? about South Africa as apartheid is starting. There’s also a prequel about Piet’s beginnings in Holland.

I also liked The Dance Tree by the same author, about the “dancing plague” of 1500s France.
